Panel Conditioning or SOCRATIC EFFECT REVISITED: 99 Citations, but is there Theoretical Progress?

2020

In a paper published as early as 1987 by Jagodzinski, Kuhnel and Schmidt on attitude measurement in a three wave panel study, we established empirically a general orientation toward foreign employees in Western Germany called “Gastarbeiter”. These items have been continuously used from 1980 till now in the ALLBUS studies (Wasmer and Hochman 2019). In this paper, we have analyzed how the citation, explanation and modeling of the Socratic effect for explaining changes in panel data developed over time starting with the original paper of Jagodzinski et al. (1987). According to Google Scholar retrieved at 24.1.2019, 99 citations were found, which are all listed in the Online Supplementary. From…

Er?mos Aporos as the Paradigmatic Figure of Western (Thanato) Political Subject

2013

The originary figure of the Western political subject is neither the Aristotelian zōon politikon nor the Agambenian homo sacer but the Socratic erēmos aporos. Like the Agambenian homo sacer, the Socratic erēmos aporos is abandoned by his fellow citizens, not outside the polis but in the polis, being a refugee in his own city. He lives, as Callicles says of Socrates in Gorgias (486c), “in his city as an absolute outcast.” Moreover, like the Agambenian homo sacer, the Socratic erēmos aporos also lives in a state close to death—“in a state as close to death as possible,” as Socrates says of himself in Phaedo (67d). However, there is a decisive difference between the Agambenian homo sacer and …

The Feast of Life or the Feast of Reason – Kierkegaard Versus Plato

2011

The article consists of three sections. The first section “Dialogue at the intersection of literature and philosophy” analyzes the fundamental differences between the two modes of human intellectual activity – philosophy and literature on the basis of Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka’s philosophy. Nevertheless, the intersection is possible in the form of dialogue. The second chapter “Negative existential maeutics” is dedicated to Kierkegaard’s conception of existential maeutics in comparison with the Socratic maeutics. The stress is put upon its negative characteristics – the distance, the interruption, the situation of existential shock. These restrictions are necessary to allow the participants’ s…

Povertà e vita. Mendicità e filosofia nel mondo greco

2015
